Happy Go Lucky Sew Along Week four

How are all of you doing with your blocks?  I love what I am seeing on the linky, please keep posting here or on Instagram with the hashtag #happygoluckysewalong !  It inspires everyone.

This week is easy peasy....we are making some filler blocks.  When I make a sampler quilt, these are the simple little blocks I like to add to fill in spaces.  The half square triangle blocks are 6" and the four patch are 3".  Then they are sewn together in a row.

For your extra block, I am showing you a variation of the half square block.  EQ called it flying geese, but I call it birds in the air....so many blocks have multiple names.

Here is the block.  You can arrange your colors anyway you choose, make all four blocks the same or vary each block.  Just play with some ideas and see what you come up with.  That is the fun of creating a one of a kind sampler!

Cutting for two blocks:

From the light fabric, cut (1) 7" square.  Cut in half once on the diagonal.
                                   Cut (2) 3" squares.  Cut in half once on the diagonal.

From the pink fabric, cut (6) 3" squares.  Cut in half once on the diagonal.

For one block:
1. Pair the 3"pink triangle with a 3" light triangle.  Sew together on the bias edge, being careful not to stretch it out.  Flip open and press towards the pink.Trim each to 2 1/2". Make 3 of these units.

  2 1/2" 

2. Now sew together as shown in the diagram below using the remaining pink triangles. 

3. Sew the rows together to create a pieced triangle unit as shown below.

                                           

4. Now sew the pieced triangle unit to one of the 7" light triangle units. 

5. Flip press towards the large light triangle.  Trim to 6 1/2".

Happy Go Lucky week Three!

Hope everyone is enjoying this little quilt along...it's the first time I have sponsored one, so if you have any suggestions that would make it better or easier or more fun...let me know.

This week is a pretty simple block....the 9 patch block and the Cross block.  They are a classic block and can be used in quilts in many ways, as well as just on their own.  The bonus block is Rolling Stone.  Just like the 9 patch and the cross block, the block changes with color placement.  I suggest you play with the colors...you can use just two, or step it up with three or four.  This will finish out as a 9 1/2" block.

Rolling Stone

Cutting: From the blue cut four 2" x 3 1/2" rectangles

                From the green, cut four 2" squares.  Draw a line on the                  diagonal.

               From the pink, cut five 3 1/2" squares

                                        Cut four 2" x 3 1/2" rectangles

                From the light, cut twelve 2" squares, draw a line on the                   diagonal. 

Sewing

Place a 2" green square on one corner of four of the pink 3 1/2" squares.  Sew on the diagonal line. Flip and trim, leaving a 1/4" seam.

Sew a 2" light square on the opposite corner, flip and trim.

Then sew to the remaining corners, flip and trim. 

The finished unit should measure 3 1/2".

Sew a pink 2" x 3 1/2" rectangle to a blue 2" by 3 1/2" rectangle.

Repeat until you have four squares as shown above.

These will also measure 3 1/2".

  

Assemble the block as shown below.....just like a 9 patch.

The Great Outdoors Blog Hop with Island Batik

AAAAh! the great outdoors! We are seeing more and more research that says

 spending time outside is good for your mental health.

 A lot like quilting, in that way!  It is for me!

So on those days when it's just too hot to fire up the iron and sewing machine,

we go outside and enjoy walking, going to the pool, or tending to our gardens.

The great outdoors are what inspired the this hop’s theme.

It is the January/February 2018 issue.  I loved the woven effect and decided to give it a go.

Happy Go Lucky Sew Along Week 2

It's week two for our sew along!  How is everyone doing with their blocks from week one?  Don't forget to add to the Linky so that you will be eligible for a prize.  This week we are sewing an old favorite called Shoo Fly.  You will make one 9" block and three 6" blocks.

For our bonus block, I made a Stiles and Paths block.  It will measure 9 1/2"

I chose two light fabrics, two dark fabrics and 2 medium fabrics.  You can mix it up any way you please.

Cutting:
From the Large navy print, cut (2) 4" squares, and cut in half on the diagonal.
                Small navy print, cut (5) 1 1/2" squares
                Peach print for center block, cut (4) 1 1/2" squares
                Peach Print, cut (2) 1 1/2" x 16 1/2" strips
                Background print, cut (1) 1 1/2" x 16 1/2" strip
               Background print, cut (2) 4" squares and cut in half on the diagonal

Sewing the block

Pair up the background and the navy 4" squares, right sides together and cut in half on the diagonal.

 Sew with a 1/4" seam, press to the dark.
Make 4 HST units.





Trim the HST blocks to 3 1/2".

             

Pair up the peach 1 1/2" x 16 1/2" strips on each long side of the background strip.  Sew with a 1/4" seam and press towards the dark.

Now cut this long strip into four 3 1/2" squares.

With the 1 1/2" peach and background squares, sew a nine patch block.  When finished, it will measure 3 1/2" .

Lay out your units so that they look like the diagram below.  Sew together in rows.

Or you can change the direction of the units in the block.

A scrappy quilt finish!

In 2017, I joined a Swap with quilters from all over the planet.  I chose to have the members of my swap bee make a simple split hatchet block.  And now it is actually finished, and I gave it to my grand daughter for her 12th birthday.  You can find the pattern here at 627handworks.com

I LOVE how bright and cheerful it turned out!  A big thank you to all my swap bee ladies for your contribution to this fun little quilt.

Finishing!

Don't you just love it when you pull out a quilt that has languished for several years in the flimsy box, and you get it quilted and bound?  Well...that's what happened this week!  I actually finished two!  I'm binding them in the evening while watching tv, but they will be done in a day or two!

Angela Walters is having a Free-motion Challenge Quilt Along, and the design for week 2 is Concentric circles.  I decided to give it a try, and now it is my new favorite free-motion quilting design.  It is so easy!  I use my Janome 7700 to machine quilt.

This is the other quilt I drug out of the closet....lots of scraps here.  Last week we found out one of our friends will be starting chemo this week for lymphoma.  I wanted to give him a quilt, so I went to the flimsy pile and pulled this one out.  It is a combination of walking foot and free motion quilting.  I love how it turned out! 

Last week I shared my pasta sauce recipe with you.  My son in law has so many tomatoes coming out of his garden he decided to try canning this pasta sauce.  I gave him my water bath canner, and look what he came up with!  That boy!  and my grandsons have been canning pickles! They know how to keep Gramma busy showing them how to can.

Happy Go Lucky Sew Along Today

Are you ready to get started?  I hope so, and I know you will love this little quilt when it is finished.

The cutting instructions are in the first half of the pattern.  You can cut everything at once, but I really recommend cutting the blocks as you go for each week.  It's much easier to keep track of the pieces, you can audition your color choices as you go along, and I am giving you and extra block to make each week. You can substitute it for one of the blocks in the pattern if you wish.  If you would like a coloring sheet, please email me and I will send you one.  yellowcatquilts@gmail.com

The other thing I highly recommend is a design wall...and if you don't have one that's ok.  It makes color placement much easier to see as we make each block.

Churn Dash or Greek Cross 

This weeks blocks are the Greek Cross....but wait, it looks like a Churn Dash!  They are one in the same and made the same way.  It is just a matter of color placement, and it is up to you.  Since we are making three 6" blocks, I made one in the Greek Cross colorway.  Check this post with an entire quilt made with the Greek Cross. 
 Barbara Brackman states that there are at least 29 names for this block.  Wonder what people were thinking as they named this block?  It became quite popular in the 1930's and I can see a block made up in feedsacks, can't you?

Your bonus block is the Goshen Star, and it is a 10" block that can be substituted for the 12" block.  Wait you are saying....not to worry, I want to show you that you can incorporate a different size and make it work!

My block is made with three colors, or you can make it with just two colors.

Color one: Cut one 2 1/2" x 18" strip  Subcut into four 2 1/2" x 4 1/2" rectangles
(blue)         Cut one 5" x 10" rectangle.  Subcut into two 5" squares.  Cut in half once on the diagonal.
Color two: Cut one 1 1/2" x 12" strip.  Subcut into eight 1 1/2" squares.   
(white)       Cut one 5" x 10" rectangle.  Subcut into two 5" squares.  Cut in half once on the diagonal.
Color three:  Cut one 2.5" square
(pink)            Cut one 1 1/2" x 12" strip.  Subcut into eight 1 1/2" squares.  
                   Cut one 2 1/2" x 10 1/2" rectangle. Cut one 2 1/2" x 12 1/2" rectangle.

Sew the color one and color two triangles right sides together to make 4 HST.  Press towards the dark.  Trim to 4 1/2"

Sew the color two 1 1/2"" squares to the top corners of the Color one 2 1/2" x 4 1/2" rectangles as shown.  Sew the color three squares to the bottom corners of the rectangles as shown.  You can draw a line diagonally or finger press to make a faint sewing line.  You will sew....flip and press.  I do not trim until I have flipped and pressed.  This is so I can be sure my corners are accurate.  Then I trim the bottom two layers of fabric.

Sew one of the rectangle units to opposite sides of the 2 1/2" pink square. Press towards the center.
Sew one of the rectangle units between two of the HST.  This is where you need to pay attention to the way you place your HST...as you can see, the placement can give an entirely different look to your block.  Play with it until you get the block you like.  At this point the block will measure 10 1/2"

Now let's make this a 12" block.  Add the 2 1/2" x 10 1/2" block to one side of the block.  Then add the 2 1/2" x 12 1/2" block to the bottom.
